Groundhog Day Feb.2nd

Groundhog Day stems from an American legend started in Pennsylvania Germans. The tradition says that if the groundhog sees its shadow when it emerges from its burrow on Feb. 2nd , it will be frightened and crawl back into its hole, and winter weather will continue for six more weeks. If the day is cloudy and the groundhog doesn't see its shadow, winter is supposed to end soon.
Have a little fun to celebrate this day. Let your child make their own burrow to play in. You can cover a card table with a blanket or use a cardboard box. A flashlight can be used to make a shadow! Fun times.

The Fight for Human Rights

In 1983 the U.S. government declared January 15, Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday, a national holiday. This year this day will be honored on January 16 because the 15th falls on a Sunday. As this day approaches, I hope we all spend some time remembering Martin Luther King and his courageous fight for human rights.

One way to remember him and refresh your memory on what this man accomplished is by reading some books about him found at the Bartlesville Public Library. This book, Martin Luther King, is found in the Juvenile Non-Fiction Biography section of the BPL and is an inspiring book both to read and look at.

This biography goes into detail about his life and how he worked to change the way black people were treated unfairly. He greatly desired equal rights for black Americans. But he was not only concerned about the black people, he desired for all people to live together in peace. Martin considered himself a citizen of the world and he cared for all people. He often spoke out against violence wherever it occurred, and nothing he believed was more violent than an unfair war.

By reading this book, you will not only learn of the life of Martin Luther King; but you will be inspired by the wonderful folk art paintings by Malcah Zeldis, who is an internationally known folk artist. Rosemary L. Bray is the author and did an outstanding job of portraying his life with fact-filled text.

This book is now on display in the center of the BPL along with other books about Martin Luther King. Let's honor the life of this man by reading some of these awesome books!!

Banana Christmas Candles

Want to do something fun with the kids on the Christmas break? Here is a simple cooking experience.
Banana Christmas Candle
4 lettuce leaves
2 bananas
4 slices canned pineapple
4 red maraschino cherry halves

Place the lettuce leaves on four salad plates. Put a pineapple slice in the center of each lettuce leaf. Peel the bananas, and cut them in half. Stand the flat end of each banana in the middle of each pineapple slice for the candle. Cut off the tip of the banana, and place a cherry half on top for the flame. Serves 4.

They Followed A Bright Star by Ulises Wensell

I love Christmas! Not only do I adore the songs of the season, the pretty lights and decorations, the delicious food, and all the get-togethers; but I love the warm fuzzy feeling inside that I get when I remember the reason for the season, the birth of Jesus. When I read this book and studied the beautiful illustrations, the warm fuzzies crept in and I'm still basking in the glow.

They Followed A Bright Star is based on a Spanish poem by Joan Alavedra and is illustrated by Ulises Wensell. We have all read and heard the wonderful story at Christmastime of shepherds and kings and the bright star they followed to Bethlehem. But there were many others who saw that bright star that night and what about them? This books talks about a man guarding the well; a plowman whose field grow wheat for bread; and a couple who grow grapes to make a special wine. These and others heard the voice of an angel; but they had to work and wait.

I really like this lyrical, radiantly illustrated story. The illustrations do not have stiffness and the rounded forms are in shaded hues which is really pleasing to the eye. But my favorite part of the whole book is that it reminds me of the awesome gift of the Christ child. Like those who had to work and wait to do their important part, we work and wait and continue to tell the beautiful story over and over.

Have a blessed Christmas and holiday season! This book can be found in the Easy section of Youth Services in the Bartlesville Public Library.

Snow for your Christmas Tree or Windows

Make snow for your Christmas tree or windows. Combine 4 cups Ivory Snow flakes with 2 cups hot water. Beat the soap and water with a electric mixer until it's thick. Let the kids brush soapy snow on the tree with their hands. You can also put the snow in the corners of your windows to create a white-Christmas snowbank effect. Have fun!!

Kids, are you looking for a gift, but low on ideas and low on money??? Check out this book from the BPL and found on the teen Christmas display!! This book is full of great presents that are easy to make and affordable. You might need a little assistance from your Mom, Dad, brother or sister; but most of it you can do all by yourself!

One of my favorite ideas was the Chocolate Spoons recipe on page 36. All you need is some plastic spoons, chocolate to melt, and a mug.

CHOCOLATE SPOONS

1. Dip a plastic spoon in melted chocolate (page 5). Make sure the bowl of the spoon is completely covered.

2. Stand the spoon --- chocolate end up --- in a glass for about 1 hour, or refrigerate for 30 minutes, until the chocolate has hardened.

Wrap a dozen spoons --- some dipped in white, some in milk and some in dark chocolate--- with a mug and the hot chocolate mix (page 34).

Crafts for Thanksgiving by Kathy Ross

Thanksgiving will soon be here! It is celebrated in the United States on the third Thursday of November and it is a time when friends and family like to celebrate and give thanks for the blessings of the year. This book, Crafts for Thanksgiving, gives you many good ideas to help your family decorate for the big event.

One great idea is Headband Napkin Rings. Here is what you need:

1. cardboard paper towel tube

2. construction paper scraps

3. markers

4. scissors

5. white glue

Here is what you do:

1. Cut a cardboard circle from the tube, about 3/4 inch wide for each napkin ring you want to make.

2. Use markers to draw a Native American design on the tube.

3. Cut a tiny feather from construction paper. Fringe both sides to make it look more feather like. Glue the base of the feather inside the band.

Make lots of napkin rings using different designs and colors!!

Cereal Box Puzzles

After the last crumb has been crunched and the free prize has been plucked, an empty cereal box makes a wonderful, inexpensive puzzle. Cut the front panel off of a box, laminate it, and then cut it into large interlocking pieces. If desired, code the back of the pieces with a numeral for easy identification. Place the pieces in a plastic resealable bag; then challenge your youngsters to reassemble the front of the box. You can save several of these packets for cold weather day projects. Who knew a cereal box could be so much fun?

Pumpkin Pops

This frozen pumpkin-flavored pop makes the perfect party treat! To make one, place the following ingredients in a three-ounce paper cup: three tablespoons of prepared vanilla pudding, two teaspoons of canned pumpkin, a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice. Stir the ingredients together with a plastic spoon. Stand the spoon in the middle of the cup and then freeze the treat. Peel the paper cup from the frozen pumpkin pop and then eat! Pretty yummy. (one small package of vanilla pudding mix makes approximately eight pops)

The Plate Monster

Kids!!

Would you like to create your own plate monster? Follow these instructions to make your very own scary plate.

What you need:

•Colorful paper plates

•Card stock or construction paper

•Doublestick tape or glue

•Googley eyes

Make it

1.Cut 1 paper plate in half with a curve as seen in photo.

2.Glue or tape the half plate to a whole plate to create monster's head.

3.Cut four strips of paper and fold accordion style for arms and legs.

4.Add hands and feet using a different color of paper.

5.Cut various face parts from other papers and attach to face with tape or glue.

6.Attach eyes with tape or glue.

You know what would be fun? Make several different plate monsters and have some friends over for some Halloween snacks!!

The Cats of Roxville Station

Do you have a cat? I do and his name is Steve. Because I’ve had Steve for a really long time, I sort of know what every kind of “meow” means. And then there are other times that I just wish I knew what Steve was trying to tell me! If you are interested in learning a bit more of the special language of cats, check out The Cats of Roxville Station by Jean Craighead George and Illustrated by Tom Pohrt.

As you read this book you will find yourself caught up in the exciting life of Rachet, a hungry kitten who is trying to find a home for herself in the suburban wilds of Roxville Station. In the wild she needs to deal with various other critters besides all the feral cats that are competing with her for food and shelter.

Much to Rachet’s surprise there is a boy named Mike who really would love to befriend her. Mike needs to learn the special language of cats to earn the trust of this feral feline.

This is a must read if you love cats!! You will be caught up in the excitement and beauty of these mysterious creatures.

Cheesey Pumpkin Grin

Ingredients for one:
slice of bread
6 cheese triangles

Diagonally cut cheese slices to form six triangles. Add to the slice of bread, two triangle eyes, one triangle nose, and three triangle for the smile. Place in toaster oven or oven on broil. Enjoy!

Falling for Leaves

Have youngsters create colorful fall foliage to hang in front of a sunny window. To make one leaf, fold a red, yellow, brown, or orange construction paper in half. Cut out one half of a simple, symmetrical leaf shape starting at the fold. Then cut out the center of this shape, leaving an outline about 1/2 inch wide. Unfold the outline: then lay on a slightly larger piece of waxed paper. Drizzle a generous amount of glue along the shape's outline and in the center of the waxed paper. Press tissue-paper squares onto the glue. When the glue is dry, peel the leaf off the waxed paper. Trim around the leaf's edges. Use monofilament line to hang the leaf in front of a window. Enjoy the beautiful colors!

Handprint Easter Lilly craft

Here is a simple activity for your Easter fun!

Supplies needed:

Construction Paper

Pencil

Scissors

Green pipe cleaner (or straws)

Tape or glue

Stapler

Trace your child's hand on construction paper. Cut the tracing out.

Curl each of the fingers around a pencil. Using the palm of the handprint, form a cone (with the fingers curling outwards). Glue or tape the cone together. Staple the flower to a pipe cleaner or a drinking straw.

Draw some leaves on green construction paper, then cut them out. Staple or tape the leaves to the straw. Make a few of these flowers for a beautiful bouquet.

Bartlesville Public Library recognizes area Chidcare Centers

The Bartlesville Public Library has an Outreach Program with several pre-schools in the community. Several centers have contributed their children's art, which will be on display in the front lobby for "Week of the Young Child". Come by and see these wonderful pieces by the children of: East Cross Early Childhood Center, Lollipop Land, Swan Lake Children's Center, Wesleyan Kiddie College, Delaware Child Development Center, Bartlesville Headstarts West and East, and Dewey Headstart.

LEGO CREATION CONTEST 2011 - RULES

Theme: A Moment in Time

Find a picture (online, magazines, internet, ect...) or take a picture, then using your own LEGO blocks duplicate that picture.

Once your creation is complete, bring it and the picture to the Bartlesville Library, Meeting Room A, on Friday, April 29th between 11:30 am and 5:00 pm or Saturday, April 30th between 9:00 am and 11:00 am.

Public viewing will begin at 1:00 pm on Saturday, April 30th, with an awards ceremony to follow at 2:00 pm. Refreshments will be served.

Winning entries will be displayed in the library lobby from May 1st through May 25th.

Eligibility:

Open to all ages, even adults. Any LEGO style building brick will be accepted, they do not have to be LEGO brand.

Rules:

The theme is “A Moment in Time” you must bring in your picture to display with your LEGO creations. It does not have to be framed, but that would make it easier to display. NO PICTURE, NO ENTRY.

No vulgar or pornographic images will be accepted. Whether an image is considered vulgar or pornographic will be up to the library’s discretion.

There will be a point system this year.

LEGO entries that do not meet size requirements will not be disqualified, but will have points deducted from their overall score. Any entry, winning or not, that is too big for the display case will NOT be displayed.

Entries must be dropped off at the library on Friday, April 29th between 11:30 am and 5:00 pm or Saturday, April 30th between 9:00 am and 11:00 am in Meeting Room A (upstairs).

No entries will be allowed after 11:00 am on Saturday, April 30th.

After dropping off your entry, you will be given a receipt. Be prepared to show this receipt or have a parent with a photo I.D. when picking up your entry. This way we can prevent any confusion.

Winning entries will be displayed in the library lobby from May 1st through May 24th. Winning contestants will need to pick up their entries on May 25th. Entries not picked up on May 25th will be taken to the staff workroom and contestants will be called.

Photos of winners with their entries will be posted on the library blogs, in the Bartlesville Examiner-Enterprise, and other media outlets. If you don’t want your picture posted to the public please let us know ahead of time.

Non-winning entries can be taken home April 30th after 3:00 pm.

It is all about eggs in April! Why not select a few books on one of the most famous eggs of all, Humpty Dunmpty? The Bartlesville Library Children's section has easy books on Humpty Dumpty for you to read to your children. Along with the books, here is a nifty art project that will fun to do.
Oh no! Humpty Dumpty really is cracked up and needs your help to put him back together. Take sheets of tissue paper and tear into small pieces and place in a container. Next cut a large shape egg form from clear contact paper. Use markers to draw a face on the slick side of the egg. Remove the paper backing from the egg and tape the egg sticky side up to a table. Cover the egg with the tissue paper pieces. When their work is complete, remove the egg from the table and trim around the edge. Place the egg on the refrigerator or a wall, or a window. Have fun!

Coffee Filter Flowers

This craft is an old favorite and we've given it a colorful twist. By using pretty water colors, you can make a large variety of beautiful blooms to decorate for Spring.

What you will need:

Coffee filters

Water color paints

Water

Paintbrush

Scissors

Green pipe cleaners

How to make:

1. Flaten the filters.

2. Paint the filters with the watercolors and let them dry.

3. Insert the green pipe cleaner into the center of the filter and grasp the center of the coffee filter and gather it around the cleaner. Twist and secure.

4. Now you can use the scissors to cut, fringe, or shape the flowers.

Bear, Bear, Spring Is Here

If you are ready for spring, play this game with your little cub and bear family. Use blankets over a couple of chairs to create a bear cave, Have the family sit in a circle on the floor near the cave opening. Ask one family member to be a bear sleeping in the cave. As soon as the bear is slumbering, give another family member a bunch of berries (pom poms or beads) to hide in their lap. When the berries are all hidden, call out, Bear, bear, spring is here! Encourage the bear to wake up and come out of the cave,then guess who is hiding the berries. Have the family member caught with the berries to become the bear and continue to play. Who's ready for spring?

Frosty The Snowman

Start the new year off with sandy "snow" in a small sensory tub. Add enough water to the sand to make it stick together like snow. Complete the sand tub with an ice-cream scooper, melon ball scooper, bowls, and other nifty circular objects. The children will develop their fine motor skills as they make snowballs, mold snowpeople, and create snow sculptures in the sand. The best part about this tactile experience is that nothing melts!

Want to have a little fun with January approaching! Here is a fun activity for the children to cook up for the winter.

Ingredients:

1 vanilla wafer per child

1 spoonful of vanilla ice cream per child

1 spoonfull of whipped topping per child (coconut can be added)

Use a foil cupcake liner . Place the vanilla wafer in the bottom. Let the ice-cream soften and then add it to the top of the vanilla wafer. Spoon the whipped topping on the top. Coconut can be added.

Crispy Christmas Tree

Why not make a fun treat with the children? Here is a simple recipe for the family to make together for Christmas

Ingredients:

1/4 cup margarine

40 marshmallows

10 to 15 drops green food coloring

5 cups crispy rice cereal

12 cone-shaped paper cups

Heat margarine and marshmallows in a 3 Qt. saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly until marshmallows are melted and mixture is mooth. Remove pan from heat; stir in green food coloring and rice cereal unitl well mixed. Place rice mixture into the cone-shaped paper cups . Refrigerate cups for 10 minutes. Tear away from cookie, and decorate each tree with red hots, pressing them into the sides and top. Makes 12 trees.

It is beginning to get colder outside. It is good to keep the children happy with activities for the winter. Here is a very simple game that they will enjoy. Bring winter inside with this game. Collect some empty styrofoam egg cartons; then use clear packaging tape to attach the cartons upside down to the floor. Place a box with winter dress-up clothes beside the egg cartons. Invite the child to dress for winter. Then encourage the child to walk over the egg cartons to get the sensation of stepping on newly packed snow. Crunch, crunch, crunch-souds just like snow!

Potato Turkey

When I was a child many years ago, we thought it was just great to pick a potato from the bin and make a potato turkey. I discovered with the Grandchildren that it is just as popular today. Let your child pick a fat potato. Use toothpicks with ruffled cellophane ends, popsicle sticks, or colored toothpicks to form the tail feathers. Golf tees can form the legs. Insert a pipe cleaner and loop to make a head. Decorate with colored leaves surrounding the turkey. Happy Thanksgiving!

What fun! A Witch's Brew

Mix up a "Witch's Brew" with which to concoct a delicious potion to give to a friend or to brew for your group to sip while you tell them a story about Halloween.
Ingredients:
2/3 instant tea
14 ounces Tang (orange flavor)
2 Pkgs. dry lemonade mix
2 cups sugar
2 tsp. cinnamon
2 tsp. powdered cloves
Mix together and store in jars.
To brew: Add 1 and 1/2 to 2 tsp. mix to 1 cup boiling water.

We are often asked in the Youth Services department about Lexile reading levels. What is Lexile? It is a measurement assigned to either an individual’s reading ability or the difficulty of the text of a book. The Lexile measure is shown as a number with an “L” after it.

The webpage, Lexile.com/fab, has a handy tool that can be used to determine the Lexile level of a book or to find books within a specified range of Lexile levels. You can even search for books that fall into a particular category or genre. If you don’t know your child’s reading level, you can enter the grade he or she is in and then choose an option stating if the books that are read in school are easy, hard or just right. This will take you to a list of suggested titles based on that criteria!

This resource is extremely hand for students from kindergarten through 12^th grade, along with their parents, caregivers, teachers and, yes,

librarians!

Two Eyes and a Nature Walk

We want our children to learn how to observe critically because this skill will be one of their most useful tools as they continue their education. This project asks the child to look for a stick, seed pod, or rock that would make an interesting face once two eyes are glued to it.

Materials:  Several pairs of plastic eyes
                 Glue
                 Lots of imagination

Procedure: Take a nature walk and look for interesting pieces from nature. Decide where to place the eyes and glue the eyes on. Wait for the glue to dry and place the new creature on a shelf for everyone to see.

Duct tape for kids?

Duct tape has lots of uses around the house. It also serves for many interesting art projects. Here is an interesting project for children. Listening walks are especially wonderful during this time of year. But, before you take that walk, cut a piece of duct tape and wrap around the child's shoe at the toe. Make sure the sticky tape is wapped on the outside of the shoe. Take the walk and record all the different sounds you hear on a piece of paper. After the walk, take the tape off and record all the contents (leaves, rocks, maybe a bug) ! Enjoy the discussion about the sounds, colors, and special items found at fall time.

Autumn Candle

Why not make a fun fall candle for the home, friends, and family? This candle is inexpensive and you probably have most of the items at home.

What you'll need:

Leaves and foliage
Glass votive holder or jar
White tissue paper
White craft glue
Water
Paintbrush
Tea light candle

How to make it:

1. Collect several colorful leaves with some life in them, avoid crumbly leaves. Lay leaves under a book for a couple of hours to flatten them.

2. Spread a layer of white glue on the outside of the votive holder. Stick the leaves to the glue and press into place. Let dry.

3. Mix equal parts of glue and water to create a decoupage paste.

4. Tear tissue paper into squares about one to two inches in size.

5. Use a paintbrush to glue the tissue paper over the leaves using the decoupage mixture. Overlap the tissue paper and make sure all of the glass is covered. Carry over the lip of the votive holder as well and be sure that the tissue paper is decoupaged against the inside of the glass.

6. Allow the jars to dry overnight.

7. Place a tea light candle inside each votive holder!

Beezus and Ramona

The plot will appeal to to the youth. Beatrice "Beezus" Quimby is a girl who has to endure the antics of her immaginative younger sister, Ramona Quimby. She is given the name Beezus by Ramona because the latter could not say Beatrice when she first learned to talk. Salena Gomez is starring as Beezus and Joey King as Ramona. Faux Stained Glass Leaves

Faux Stained Glass Leaves

Make several of these pretty window hangers to display in the sun.

What you'll need:

1 sheet black construction paper

Tissue paper in fall colors

1 sheet clear contact paper

scissors

glue stick

toothpick

ribbon

suction cup hanger

How to make it:
1. Peel back half of the backing from the contact paper, leaving the other half still protected. Fold over the backing to keep it out of the way.
2.Tear the fall tissue paper into small pieces and place them on the sticky side of the contact paper. Keep them close together.Overlapping is fine.
3. Carefully peel off the backing off the other side of the contact paper and fold over contact paper sandwiching the colored tissue paper. Press out any air bubbles.
4. Fold construction paper in half and cut a single leaf shape. This should make two leaves. Cut the centers of the leaves out. Leave about 1/2 inch border.
5. Using your leaf shape as a guide, trim the contact leaf paper. This should be just a little smaller than your leaf shape. Place the leaf shape over the stained glass shape, cut stained glass shape to fit , and glue the black leaf shape down over the stained glass.
6.Punch a hole at the top with a toothpick and add ribbon to hange.Trim the ends.
7. Hang suction cup and hang the faux stained glass leaf.

Start the School Morning with a Flair

In these easy and delightful bites, shredded potatoes are baked in a muffin tin to form crunchy cups, which are filled with scrambled eggs.

1 (3&1/2 cup) bag frozen potatoes, defrosted

1/3 cup vegetable oil

1/2 tsp. salt

1/4 tsp. pepper

6 eggs

2/3 cup milk

1/2 cup finely diced onions

1/3 cup finely diced bell peppers

3/4 cup diced cooked sausage

Shredded cheese

Bake the shredded potatoes, mixing the vegetable oil and salt and pepper together and placing in a muffin tin. Scramble the eggs, add milk, onions, peppers, and cooked sausage. Top with the shredded chesse.

Susan Sykes "The Pocket Lady"

What fun we had with the group at 2:00 last Monday! Tiki even got to say hello to some old buddies that had went to sea and had returned home.
Next Monday the 28th, is an afternoon at the movies. We will be showing the "Princess and the Frog". Popcorn and lemonade will be served. Tiki can't wait to cash in on the goodies!

We are currently taking enrollment for the summer reading program. All children ages 0-12 are invited to participate. Children need to call in(338-4170) or e-mail (srp@bartlesville.lib.ok.us) and report their reading on a weekly basis. Each time your child reads they will receive a prize from the goodie box. Read all 8 weeks, and your child will be entered for a grand prize drawing. Your child does not have to be present every week (since many will be on vacation), just as long as you report your child's reading for each week.
